NGO slams Lebanese General Security for deporting Iraqi refugee

6/10/2011

The non-governmental organization Frontiers Ruwad Advocacy said in a statement issued on Thursday that the Lebanese General Security deported an Iraqi refugee, although the latter voiced “his complete rejection to return [to Iraq] out of fear for his life.”

“Once again the Lebanese General Security [violates] all international charters and commitments recognized by the Lebanese constitution,” the statement said.

The statement added that the Lebanese General Security “once again [ignored]” the judiciary, which issued three verdicts to “immediately release” Iraqi refugee, Jawad al-Jabouri.

According to the group, the General Security “arbitrarily detained” Jabouri for more than three years.

“Jabouri was deported in mysterious circumstances without taking any measures to ensure his safe return and without informing the authorities that are following up on his case.”

The group also said that Jabouri’s case is not the first, and called for respecting human rights, Lebanese law and Lebanon’s international commitments.
